Travel insurance

Travel insurance is good to have when you travel abroad. It can cover the cost of medical care, lost luggage, cancellations of trips and other unexpected events during the trip. 

If you feel that the travel cover in your home insurance is  not enough

Home insurance includes basic travel cover and is usually valid for 45 days (in some cases 60 days). The content of the basic travel cover can vary depending on which home insurance company you have and whether you have chosen to buy extended travel cover or not. If you want to supplement your travel cover and close the gaps in your home insurance, it may be a good idea to take out travel insurance Plus.    

If you do not have home insurance 

If you do not have home insurance, it is important to buy travel insurance that provides compensation for unforeseen events or expensive hospital stays. The most important thing is that you have travel insurance that covers costs that arise if you need hospital treatment, repatriation at a time other than planned or liability and legal protection. Travel insurance Basic is a good insurance if you do not have any home insurance. Keep in mind that the travel insurance must be taken out and paid for before you start the trip.   

If you have home insurance and are going to be away for longer than 45 days 

The basic travel cover included in the home insurance is valid for 45 days (in some cases 60 days). If you are going to be away longer, it is important to buy insurance from day 46 onwards as you are otherwise completely uninsured if something should happen at the destination. Travel insurance Basic can be taken out from day 46 and provides compensation in the event of bad luck, it covers, among other things, costs for hospital care, repatriation, liability protection, legal protection, luggage and property protection.  

The EHIC entitles you to necessary medical care within the EU/EEA countries and Switzerland on the same terms as residents of the country you are visiting. The card entitles you to the same state care as the country's residents have and at the same prices, but the standard of public hospitals is in many cases significantly lower than what we are used to in Sweden. In addition, the patient fee can be much higher in some countries than in Sweden. The EHIC does not cover repatriation in the event of illness or accident, nor the costs of private medical care.  

The EHIC mainly covers emergency medical and dental care and does not cover, for example, repatriation in the event of illness or accident, costs for hospital treatment that is not deemed necessary, or costs for private healthcare. 

Private travel insurance is more comprehensive and provides broader coverage and may include more benefits such as baggage delays, medical and hospital costs, travel home in case of illness or accident, and other types of assistance and compensation during the trip. So, the difference between the EHIC and a private travel insurance is mainly in the scope of the protection and the various benefits included. 

Having card insurance when you go on a trip is usually not enough. The card insurance is a supplement to the home insurance and the card insurance does not cover, for example, the costs of medical care, repatriation, serious incidents at home, liability costs, etc.  

Depending on which card you have, there are differences in what is included in the card insurance; Cancellation insurance, delay compensation and deductible cover (home and car insurance) are usually included, but there are cards that cover more. It's important to double-check what applies to your card insurance to be sure you have adequate protection during your trip.  

It may be wise to supplement with separate travel insurance to be extra sure that you are well protected. 

The insurance is valid for the benefit of the insured who is stated on the insurance certificate or booking confirmation.
